The BIB
Balloon

The BioEnterics®
Intragastric Balloon (BIB®) is a saline-filled silicone
balloon with a radiopaque valve that can be seen on x-rays. It is becoming
much more of a "lifestyle" product in other markets in Europe.
It is easily inserted in under 15 minutes, and takes about the same time
to remove. It can only stay in place for SIX months, after which time
a second balloon may be inserted. Generally, patients only have one (and
occasionally two) balloons. Rarely, very large patients may have several
successive balloons over several years.
It is suitable for patients
who do not want to have obesity surgery. This is our major patient group,
along with patients whose BMI is under 35 (hence are now presently unsuitable
for Bands.) It can also be used to reduce operative risk (e.g.
for hip operations, obesity surgery etc.)
In general the BIB® is
indicated for temporary use in weight loss therapy for patients who have
to achieve weight loss.
Complications of the BIB®
are unusual, although it is uncomfortable for the first few days, and
many patients may request it to be removed. They must just put up with
it, as the discomfort always stops very soon.
Here
are a few images of the BIB being placed:
