I am exactly one week out from my Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy surgery with Dr. Joya and his team on July 21, 2009. I feel great, I'm healing very well, and I can't say enough about the quality of care I found in Puerto Vallarta. My surgery was at the San Javier hospital. Everyone from Nathalie, to Dr. Joya, Dr. Espinosa, the psychologist, the doctor who visited me in my hotel room after I was released (sorry, I can't remember all your names offhand), and the nursing staff were very helpful and attentive. My surgery was at San Javier hospital.

Thank you Dr. Joya and all of your team for your great services. Oh, and thanks to Gerald, who set things up from the US side.

biggrin 3 years out and LOVING MY LIFE!!! I just finished the last of my plastic surgery to remove the remains of my former fat self and I thought I would send another thank you for giving me life back. I've been through alot in my life, 4 c-sections, gall bladder removal, gastric bypass, tummy tuck, arm lift, breast lift, chin lift, butt lift AND thigh lift...but I wore a bikini the other day and that was worth it ALL!!! It has been almost 5 months since my gastric bypass for diabetes. My insulin use is minimal. Down from 300 units every three days to 300 units a month or less. I am a long term diabetic, and have been on insulin for quite a few years, so this improvement is monumental for me. I have lost about 50 lbs, and I think if the extra skin was off, I would be at my goal weight. I am able to eat small amounts of any food, but i do stay away from sugar added foods. There have been only brief sensations of nausea, and that is when I forget and eat too fast. the weight loss feels so great, and I am now wearing a size 4 pants. I was a 14 at least before the surgery. This is the best thing I have done for myself other than becoming a nurse. If you are considering Dr Joya for your care I can highly recomend the care and expertise practiced in Puerto Vallarta thumbup

I have lost touch with everyone.......moved from Philadelphia, Pa to Fayetteville, WV to open a new restaurant, so have been super busy. However........in March of 2008 I had RNY surgery with Dr. Joya in PV. Amazing. To sum it up, aboulutely amazing. I feel better than I ever have in my entire life, I went from a size 28 now to sizes 8 and 10 and from 280 to 157. I am happy camper! Also I am 57 years old. So.........if you want a miracle and you can possibly do it, then do it for yourself.

sad ok I'm scared to go to Mexico is it safe?? Really someone be honest with me is this a good thing? Can you use USA money? Is it really all inclusive? Can I fly from Missouri?

how do you get fills with lap band in the usa, and what is the cost in usa to do fills? Can't keep flying back.

My husband is very not for this, because of being out of usa? Do we have to have a pass port??

Does anyone know can you go early, and what is the cost to go down 3 days early?? Thought we could enjoy IF SAFE for a few days before the surgery??

Do all staff speak English??
Is everything very clean and updated?

as you can tell I am scared to go out of state
sad

Fill me in on good and bad question

Thank you for your honesty,
Lorie

I am seriously considering having VSG done by Dr. Joya. I have been apprehensive because I am an RN here in the states and going to Mexico for surgery is a bit scary. I have been looking for any information on Dr. Joya....and all the posts are very comforting. I have about 130 lbs. to lose and my insurance won't cover the VSG. questionThanks for any help you can give me !

I had the sleeve done by Dr. Joya on January 6th and so far I am very happy with it. Dr. Joya was very competent. The first night was a little rough because of the gas but everyday after that got better. My son is 18 years old and has struggled with his weight his whole life. If he wanted to get a sleeve done, I wouldn't hesitate to bring him to Mexico to Dr. Joya. Why should someone struggle with their weight for longer than necessary. I wish that I had done this years ago.

When I got to the Cornerstone hospital on Monday January 5th, there was the usual paper work associated with a hospital admission/ cut down by 2 thirds. Less paper work, Imagine that. Then Nathalie did a brief weight, and a few more pages to fill out that got lost in the nether space of E mail. The Hospital was cool, clean and calm, and the staff were comfortable and competent in completing the task of getting a slightly nervous Old Rn ready for surgery. The IV was completed with the first try, and lasted the full four days I was in their care.
Over all this was the most relaxing hospital experience I have ever encountered, and if and when any other surgeries are needed , this will be the place. I happened to be one of 3 patients for several of the days of my stay, so getting the call light answered was amazing thumbup . We will leave PV on Monday,<tomorrow>, and I feel secure that having had none of the dreaded side effects possible that this is the start of a wonderful new health experience in treating my diabetes.

I had my lapband done in Mexico by Dr Joya in about 6 years ago. The experience was good. I have done really well with it. I have lost about 40 lbs. I have been back to have 2 fills, and am getting another one early 2009. It helps to keep having the fills. My problem is that I have to remember to eat slowly!!! I have had to throw up a lot of times because I forget. I find that bread and meat are hard to get down. If I stick with hamburger I am pretty much OK. If I eat slow. Even now I still get full really fast. Sometimes I can eat 3 more times on food I brought home from a restaurant. Pop with the carbonation bothers me and that has made me throw up. I am glad I had the surgery!! Everyone at the hospital is wonderful. Dr Joya is great and handsome!! Natalie is a sweetheart. She will definately take good care of you. I can't wait to see her again! It was a good experience and I would recommend it to anyone. There are tons of people from the US that come here so don't be afraid that it is Mexico. Thinking about it?? Go for it!! smile

Dr. Joya and his staff are amazing. I began my process originally planning on the lapband in the US. After my insurance situation changed I began to look into surgery in Mexico. I will admit I thought it was crazy at first.....but after doing extensive research I realized it was a safe and perfect solution. I looked at multiple surgeons before choosing Dr. Joya. Other surgeons only asked minimal questions and required very little medical information before "approving me." But Dr. Joya's team required virtually the same medical information as the US surgeon I was working with. Gerald answered all my questions quickly and with very clear precise answers. Every step of the way went smoothly and made me even more sure I had made the right choice. I was impressed with each member of his team from Natalie to the hospital staff to each of the different doctors you encounter along the way. Everyone was kind and professional--treated me so well and answered any questions I might have had. My surgery went off extremely smoothly. I was back in my room quickly and to be very honest experienced only minor discomfort. Nothing like what I would call pain. I am now almost four months post surgery. I have lost a total of 120 pounds....74 post surgery. I have celebrated my choice and great success ever since. I feel great and everyone tells me I look great. I am three sizes in clothes smaller and can't wait to lose my remaining 149 pounds. VSG--vertical sleeve gastrectomy---is a wonderful surgery. Choosing a surgery is a personal decision but no one should be frightened of VSG. It is a lifesaver with far fewer risks, complications or challenges than RNY or lapband. If you are thinking about it...do the research then make the call. My only regret? I wish I had done this sooner! wink

I lost 40pounds on my pre-op and ive lost another 16 pounds since i have been home and i am toning and tighting so far while i am losing weight wink . I dont know how many inches ive lost, but you can tell every week that im losing pretty much everywhere. The energy i have is amazing too, i havent felt this great in almost five years, i go all day and sleep 8 to10 hours and then back up in the morning to start all over again. I am only on one medicine, besides my antacid and my multi vitamin which i'm starting as soon as monday. just to be off of all my other meds and insulin is worth it all to me. so thank you very much for everything.

I had Gastric Bypass on November 21st with Dr. Joya, and he is an amazing doctor. Everything went great, and I was able to leave Mexico the day after I was released from the hospital. I did not need any further pain pills after being discharged, and today I have no pains. In fact the only thing that bothers me are the stitches, which I am getting out tomorrow.

Dr Joya and his staff are amazing!!! Natalie you are great, and Mexico would not be the same with out you. The nurses at Cornerstone are great, and they are always there as soon as you need them. Dr. Joya thank you so much for everything, You are truly a gift from God!

I have absolutely no regrets for having my surgery in Mexico.

MY SISTER, BARBARA AND I WERE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED WHEN ALL OF THE THINGS THAT I WAS TOLD THROUGH THE WEB SITE REGARDING THE TRANSPORTATION, FACILITY, SURGERY, NURSING CARE, AND RESULT WERE ALL TRUE. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE DONE ANYTHING LIKE THIS SO QUICKLY AND I AM SO HAPPY, SO FAR.

NATALIE AND DR JOYA AND ALL THE STAFF WERE FABULOUS.

I AM FEELING VERY WELL, THE LARGEST INCISION AND THE PORT SPOT ARE STILL A LITTLE SORE BUT HEALING NICELY. I HAVE LOST ANOTHER 15 LBS SO FAR. THAT'S 25 LBS FROM SEPTEMBER 27TH. I HAVEN'T HAD TO TAKE ANY PAIN MEDS FOR 8 DAYS. MY ANKLES AND KNEES HAVE QUIT HURTING. I HAVE DECREASED THE AMOUNT OF SOME OF MY MEDICATIONS. I AM ABLE TO WALK MY DOG AT LEAST 1/2 MILE A DAY. I FEEL GREAT.

I AM SURE I WILL BE BACK FOR A VACATION IN THE FUTURE. I WILL COME BACK AND GIVE ALL OF YOU A BIG HUG.

LOVE YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR EVERYTHING

I was very happy with Dr. Joya and his staff. He took some time before the surgery to discuss some fairly unimportant questions I had (but he didn't treat them that way!), and based on my personal experience, he is a very skilled surgeon. The care at Cornerstone Hospital was far, far more attentive than what I would expect to get at a US Hospital and the place was extremely clean and well supplied. Although I can remember feeling pretty rough and uncomfortable for the first day and a half after surgery, I can honestly say I had no pain to speak of -- just some gas and heartburn that were both quickly controlled with medication.

As soon as I arrived, they started working on getting me ready for preop. I arrived at 1p.m. and was operated at 5 p.m. That very night I was up and walking. The next day the started me on ice and then liquids. I was released from the hospital at 1 p.m. day after surgery. They were amazing.

Thank you to all for a truly good experience, now I have to loose the weight. Lost only 2 pds. after all that water and clear juice since the surgery, it should be more than 10.lol. But I guess the gas has something to do with it. I did only cheat one time at the Airport, I had a sip of my husband coffee to warm me up, one sip. It has been Water and low calorie juices. I'm not hungry and my blood sugar stays around 115 - 170 max. Have not taking any medication for Diabetic since I'm back.
Thank you again

I just had my RNY on October 9, 2008. I was really nervous because I had the lap band 2 years ago and saw some weight loss but no improvement in my diabetes. It took me a long time to decide about the RNY, and I took 9 months researching where to go and who to do it.
I choose Dr. Joya and I am really glad I did. His staff is wonderful and extremely helpful. I could not have been in better hands. The doctors and nurses were wonderful and right on top of my diabetes. Puerto Vallarta is also a beautiful place to recover!
Even though it is just 2 weeks, I have already seen a dramatic reduction in my insulin intake. Even with a slight infection, my blood sugar is lower than it should be. I know as I lose weight and regulate my sugar I can only get better.
I want to thank Dr. Joya and the whole staff for offering the RNY and Metabolic surgery to patients with lower BMI's. I do believe that some diabetics can use the surgery to help diminish the effects of diabetes, facilitate weight loss and help with sugar cravings.
On another note, I have also made life long friends. Thank you to Neil, Wendy, Ron, Cheryl and Paul and Pat who also participated in this journey. In addition to great care, and great results my family is also expanded to include these great people.
If you are thinking about the surgery, just do it. You are in great hands with Dr. Joya.

It has been 9 months and am down 95 pounds so far.
This was the best decision I have ever made in my life, and would recommend it to anyone. The hospital, staff, hotel, plane, people, etc. were all great - I have not one bad example to post.

I had the gastric bypass in Jan 2006. I went from 328 lbs to 165. I have maintained this weight loss for over 2 years now. I highly recommend Dr. Joya and his staff. I would do it all over again. I know some people do put weight back on, I am not sure why this has not applied to me, seems the obsession with food is completely gone. I've had a blood panel each year, and it always comes back in "perfect" health. Do NOT hesitate, I say go for it....

The skills of the medical staff are second to none. I'm 7 weeks post op and down 43 lbs from when I started the liquid diet. 56 lbs to go.

I see these concerns about Mexico and the hospital but it was absolutely fine. everything was smoother than I expected. I've had very little pain and almost none since I came home. But I'd still stay a few extra days and enjoy PV once you're feeling better.

I highly recommend Dr. Joya and team so if you're on the fence about it, you're just delaying your weight loss.

I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I had my gastric sleeve performed by Dr Joya on April 11, 2008 - I cannot express enough the wonderful care I received at the Cornerstone Hospital - it was clean, lots of staff for each patient, the rooms were all private with all the amenities you could want or need. I cannot say enough about the staff and Dr Joya's assistants - Dr Espinoza. I travelled to Mexico alone but never felt "lonely".
I would do this again in a heartbeat and would recommend Dr Joya and his whole staff to anybody that needs a life changing experience.

The hotel that Dr Joya uses is gorgeous!!!!! They put all his patients in one building so I was able to meet other people and spent a lot of time in the lobby "comparing notes"!!!

Don't wait another minute!! - JUST DO IT!

I had a VSG with Dr. Joya on March 17, 2008. Dr. Joya is very nice, quiet, and seems to really know what he is talking about. I had every confidence in him going into my surgery. I had a minor complication, but Dr. Joya was able to correct it as well as give me my Sleeve. Everything was very different in Mexico...as far as having surgery. I am an RN and was surprised at the differences. I was pleased, overall, with the care I received from Dr. Joya and his staff and the Cornerstone hospital staff. Everyone was very nice. The language barrier presented only minor problems. There are plenty of people around who speak English, so don't hesitate to ask for someone who speaks it. I would probably go back and do it all over again. My recovery is still continuing, so I'm glad that I don't have to re-do anything! I am glad that its over. I absolutely loved the NH Krystal hotel that we stay in. It is so beautiful. Thank you, Dr. Joya and your staff!

Dr. Joya and the team saved my life. My bloodsugars were at 400-450 with 2 pills and 5 shots a day. It was only a matter of time until I lost a limb, had renal failure or went blind. I am one month out today I no longer need Diabetic Medication, I am testing at 138 with no meds and my Dr thinks that is fantastic and so do I.I have also lost 33lbs.

The Joya team is filled with kind, compassionate , caring dr's and support staff that also are the best dr's ever. I never once felt any trepidation or fear. They also treated my Hubby for a high fever and flu he had wehn we got to Mexico. Love Him Love Him Love Him

I am very nervous at the entire idea of getting a bi-pass surgery. I do not have a lot of weight related or even other health problems... Only one, I had to have my gall-bladder removed. But I want to do something before I start to have issues with my health. rolleyes

I am really concerned with going to Mexico, I am not big on traveling. I do not speak ANY Spanish. Plus there is the fact that Mexico is a LONG way away. I am concerned about complications and what that would mean for me, I would not want to get stuck in Mexico! sad

Can anyone offer me some more personal experiences... What were some of your concerns. What realistic challenges should I prepare myself for? What are questions that you wished you would have asked? What are things that you wish could have gone differently? What are the results you are getting now? I see that literally EVERYONE has 5 stars. Which actually makes me more nervous then anything! eek I put only three stars so that I stand out in the crowd! HAHAHA!!!!!

Thanks,
Debbie tongue

mad I am considering the Lapband procedure and am very nervous about going to Mexico to have this done! I have read the testimonials and see that they are all 5 star, are there any testimonials that are less than the 5 stars? In other words, has anyone out there had this done by Dr. Joya and are having complications, infections, regrets, and flat discourage anyone in going to Mexico to have Lapband done by this doctor? I am scared to death about "going under" in a foreign land alone! Please help me by responding. I am so tired of being over weight by 100 pounds. I am 46, a new grandma, and two teenagers at home and I need my health and energy back. I want my retirement days with my husband to be awesome. Mainly I want self esteem back and to know that I am going to live a long Happy Life........... mad

I felt compelled to write this testimonial after returning from Mexico where I received my lapband from Dr. Joya. I am a nurse from the USA, who has been dealing with weight loss issues for years. I tried many weight loss tactics which all resulted in failure, (lose 10 pounds, gain 15). I didn't have time for exercise, ( 2 jobs, kids, etc). and a million excuses for not being able to. Besides, with being overweight, I didn't have the energy and I lacked self-esteem, so there was no motivation for exercise. (I did try the gym for a short time, but that didn't seem to give me results. I seemed to eat more, since I was burning calories. Besides, I wasn't committed for the above reasons).

So, in desperation, I realized I wanted to do something about my weight. I didn't want gastric bypass. That is too permanent, I am not sure about long term consequences and I need to be able to reverse what I am doing for my weight loss, just in case , down the road, they find harmful side effects. And that is where the lapband seemed the best alternative. I spoke with nutritionists who have said the key to weight loss is small, frequent meals. My problem is portion control. When I really like something, I don't control my portion size. It is difficult, since I am considered an "emotional eater" or "stress eater" too. I find satisfaction and comfort in GOOD food. So, the lapband appears that it will fix my greatest downfall, and that is portion control.

Now, I had to decide how to go about getting the lapband done. Insurance wouldn't cover it. So, I had to pay cash. In the USA, cheapest was $11,000. In Mexico, it was $8,000. Now, my decision was, should I chance going to Mexico. I am dealing with a surgery and putting my life into the hands of someone in a country, that I am not familiar with. You know, you hear the stories, "substandard care, cockroaches, etc". Well, let me tell you. All of my fears were unnecessary. When I researched online MD's in Mexico, there didn't appear to be any negative comments on Dr. Joya. There is a lapband site not affiliated with Dr. Joya that adds comments on all lapband doctors and Dr. Joya was spoken of with all positive comments.

So, let me tell you of my experience. After two years of deliberating. When I decided I wanting to get the lapband, I called Dr. Joya and was able to schedule my surgery within 2 weeks. I paid the $8,000 and that included everything ( no hidden costs). They paid and arranged the airfare, transportation (except back to the airport from the hotel, that cost $5), and all surgical related expenses. Nothing else came out of my pocket.

Now here is my story of my journey. I arrived Mexico on Tuesday, (by myself). The prearranged taxi, by Dr. Joya was waiting for me. They brought me to the Cornerstone Hospital (nice, clean hospital, NO signs of filth. JCHACO, Department of Health would not have any environmental issues). They performed tests on me. They got my blood work and IV with one needle stick. After 4 hours and meeting key players dealing with my healthcare, I went to the OR. I was awake as I was transferred to the OR table and they applied monitoring equipment on me. I was thinking OK, where is anesthesia, I am ready for the good stuff that will knock me out. I was thinking, OK, I saw enough of the OR, when are they going to knock me out. And, before you know it, I am opening my eyes and the procedure is over. It only lasted 30 minutes. Pain was minimal, the staff was great at giving pain medicine in the IV. Don't refuse it, just keep asking for it. There is no need to be uncomfortable. I was able to walk to the bathroom that night, without any problems. I slept on and off through the night. Not because of pain, but because I couldn't believe I did it. The next morning I showered and packed for the Hotel. I didn't have any problems with any valuables missing. The key people spoke English. (the only thing I would suggest is bring a small translation book for Spanish when you speak to ancillary help). Just in case there is something you want. I wanted chicken broth, but the dietary staff didn't understand. So then they transferred me to the Hotel. It was a beach front hotel and under other circumstances, I would have had a blast at that hotel. But, since I just had surgery, I wasn't exactly up to "partying it up". I felt good, but not that good.

I recovered that 2nd night in the hotel, taking my pain meds and antibiotics that Dr. Joya provided. The next day, Thursday, I was on my way home. I went to the shops next to the hotel for mementos, but found Puerto Vallarta to be commercialized with Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Starbucks, Outback’s, etc. Hey, I thought I was in Mexico, but, I almost felt like I was back home. Except in Mexico, it was 79 degrees, not 20. There was a beautiful ocean, it was nice. So, I took a taxi back to the airport (10 minutes away) and I was on my way home. I got in Philly at 2am and drove straight to work at 5am. Yes, I felt that okay, that I went to work. I wouldn't advise you to do that, you should pamper yourself for a day or two. But, for me, it was unavoidable. Bottom line though, is that I was actually okay enough to do it.

So, for anyone that is skeptical and wants to know if they should do it. I say go for it. You will not be disappointed. I received care that was comparable to care that you would receive in the USA. I was safe. The price was awesome and there were no extra expenses. I definitely would recommend Dr. Joya. He is professional. He has staff like Natalie, that "hold your hand" and walk you through the whole experience. And once you return to the United States, there are Doctors in your area that will monitor and fill your band as needed so that you don't have to travel back to Mexico. Not that I wouldn't love to travel back there, because I definitely would have Dr. Joya follow up with me. But, because of the cost of travel, it makes it difficult.

I hope this information helps anyone considering the lapband in Mexico. I highly recommend Dr. Joya.

Hi. I am very interested in the Gastric Bypass and have been looking at Dr. Joya's website. As I sure a lot of you felt the same way, I am very anxious about going out of the country for this kind of surgery but with no insurance coverage for it, don't have much of a choice if I want it. Can someone give me feedback on Dr. Joya? How the visit was in personal sense. I do see a lot of good feedback on this sight but looking for more of the personal touch. Thank to anyone!!

I had the privilege of going to Puerto Vallarta for a Lap RNY with Dr. Joya and his staff . I had my surgery Nov 13/07.
After i got back a lot of people asked me what it was like and all that to have surgery in Mexico. All i can say is that the care was awesome. All of the Drs were wonderful. I loved the Drs sense of humor. I took two friends with me and both of them said it was the best time they had. Dr Jorge Martinez was the Dr that came to see me every day in the hotel. And he is a wonderful Dr. His bedside manner was wonderful, And his sense of humor made me heal much faster. All in all i would do it all again. I am hoping to get my plastics done in Mexico to when i am done with the weight loss. tonguethumbup

I am proud to recommend Dr. Joya and his medical team to anyone who is seriously considering weight loss surgery. I chose Dr Joya to from a long list of Bariatric Surgeons based on his experience, education, specialization and patient testimonials and I am very satisfied. I was confident in my decision before I even met Dr Joya, but that confidence grew immensely after actually interacting with him.
I underwent the Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass on 26-Nov-2007 at the Cornerstone Hospital in Puerto Vallarta Mexico. The surgery was successful and there were no complications of any kind. This was primarily due to the competence of the doctors and surgeons; however, the nursing staff and the pre-op diet and balloon exercises also played an important roll.
I was struck by how compassionate, friendly and modest all of the surgeons and doctors were. They did not make me feel unimportant or insignificant in any way (which is common when dealing with many western medical doctors). I was also struck how each Doctor made a point to touch me either by shaking my hand or patting my leg each time they visited me in the hospital or hotel. This really made me feel important and cared for.
They also took strides to make my family feel at ease and to answer their questions. This was important because my mother and sister both work in the health care field and my decision to have surgery in Mexico was a bit unsettling for them. My mother and sister were both very impressed and satisfied with the care I received.
The language barrier was not an issue with my nurses at the Cornerstone. In fact, I felt that I was in very good hands and would like to post a ‘thankyou’ to Ruben, Yolanda, Janey, Ignatio and Drossa for being so gentle and kind.
The doctors and surgeons were fantastic! I was visited by 5 the morning following surgery (Drs Joya, Espinoza, Olivares, Martinez and Rodregez?) and then from 3-4 each day following during my stay in the hospital. I was also checked on daily while at the hotel.
I have absolutely no complaints or regrets regarding my decision to have the bypass surgery and would like to thank all of the Medical Staff for taking such good care of me in Puerto Vallarta.
*A special thanks to Dr Olivares and Nathalie for just being wonderful!
I would be more than happy to share my experience with anyone who is considering Dr Joya and/or the procedure I had.

I underwent RNY gastric bypass with Dr. Joya on April 20th, 2007 and have lost 90lbs down from my highest weight of 250lbs! I owe much gratitude to my Mom for travelling with me to PV and being my support system, my husband and children for loving me enough to let me go, Dr. Joya for being the amazingly kind and talented surgeon that he is along with his top-notch staff, and Susan Maria Leach of www.bariatriceating.com and www.beforeandafterchat.com for the absolute best post-op support on the internet. This has been a long and scary roller coaster of a ride, but I wouldn't get off for anything in the world!!!

I have lost 40 lb. since the day I started the 2 week pre-op diet. I'm starting Curves tomorrow for increased exercise and expect to lose more faster. I am an RN and did a LOT of research before choosing to come to Dr. Joya for surgery. I have 2 very close friends, also RN's, who went to Dr. Joya and therefore referred me. I wrote this for my website(shrinkinglaura.com)/someone else but I figured I'd post it here, too!

I had surgery in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico with Dr. Joya back in July and it was seriously the best thing I have ever done.

The total cost for the surgery/expenses was $12,500USD and that included my tests, surgeon fees, surgery, anesthesiologist, transportation, airfare, hospital (4 nights) and 4 nights in the nH Krystal (5 star resort on the coast on Banderas Bay). I contacted Gerald gerald@drjoya.com and he went through all of the requirements over the phone, I paid my $1000 deposit and got all of the paperwork to fill out which included medical history and pych. evaluation, also booked my plane tickets while I was on the phone to make sure I got a date/time that was best for me.

I arrived in PV three days before surgery so that I could have a bit of fun in Mexico first The day before surgery, Nathalie (Joya's assistant) came by the resort and gave me some money and some information about the surgery so I could read over it the night before. The day of surgery, I took a taxi to the hospital (about 2 mins away) and met Nathalie in the front office, we went over some paperwork and got weighed and then prepped for surgery (bloodwork etc.. apparently I'm an A-!). Dr Joya came in to see me right before surgery and he held my hand and talked to me a bit and made me feel really comfortable. I was wheeled into the OR and the last thing I remember was being told that they'll see me in a couple of hours. I woke up in the recovery room and there were a couple of nurses around me making sure that I was okay and that I woke up so I could go into my room. Later that night, I woke up (finally) and was wheeled into my room by a couple of really sweet nurses who kept holding my hand and telling me that I did great in surgery! Recovery went really well, I had minimal pain, if I needed assistance or medication I didn't have to wait forever for a nurse.. nurses come in every hour to check and make sure you're doing okay.. they will give you pain meds no questions asked! The room had a private air conditioning with remote control and a beautiful view of the outside.. also had it's own television with 80 channels (a lot were in English, even). Every day after surgery, the nurses come in to check on you but Dr Jorge Martinez would be the doctor taking care of you after surgery, he comes in to check the bandages and make sure you're doing okay and he talks to everyone to make them feel a bit more comfortable. I was in the hospital for 4 days and then released to the resort to continue recovering.. the resort is absolutely stunning (pictures). For the four days that I was in the resort, Dr Jorge still came to check up on me every morning and check my bandages and whatnot. After the 4 days are up, I felt pretty much back to normal.

.. Nathalie gave me all of the paperwork from surgery including blood work results, gastric bypass diet, an explanation of what happened during surgery etc etc. I took a taxi back to the airport and flew back home.. no discomfort or anything from surgery.

I'd say I was feeling back to normal within 4-5 days after surgery.. bending down was a little bit hard for a couple more days after that but all in all.. not too shabby Dr Joya and his staff were excellent, the surgery went amazing, they made sure I was always comfortable... I have absolutely nothing to complain about. I received far better care in Mexico than I ever have in the US or Canada.. highhlyyyy recommend Dr Joya. If you are serious about getting surgery in Mexico I would definitely consider giving Gerald a call/email to find out more information. biggrin

I just realized that this post was here for those of us fortunate to have had Dr Joya and his wonderful staff for our WLS. I wanted to say that the entire trip, beginning at the airport was great.

Everything went according as I was told and no one could ask for or expect any better experience in an American hospital. DR Joya, both of the attending physicians, Nathalie and the entire hospital staff were absolutely wonderful. Many friends and family members were concerned about leaving the country........... it's only leaving the country, not going back to the dark ages!! LOL

My daughter went with me and commented several times about how clean and neat the hospital was and yet they cleaned it continuously............... It was spotless and shining. Every person involved in my care was absolutely exceptional...............

Thanks so much, Dr Joya for a new lease on an old lady's life. You make miracles possible!!
God Bless, Karen

I am just over 5 months out from the Vertical Sleeve Surgery(2/19/07) and on my 5 month anniversary of this surgery I had lost 100 pounds. I feel wonderful. My diabetes is controlled with diet alone! Eating has gone very well. I have never once thrown up. In the beginning it is a real adjustment to the quantity of food you can eat. But you get over that after a bit of time goes by. It is amazing to see the weight just coming off. I am so happy with my decision to go to PV and have Dr Joya do my surgery. I started out in the super morbid obese category. I still have another 100 pounds to lose. I feel that I will accomplish that in the future. The hospital is very nice as well as all the staff. The Krystal was beautiful. I felt like I was in heaven there. I really want to come back and see the staff and spend some time at the Krystal again.
It is the place that I was Re-born from. Thank you so much for helping me change my life and for helping me to become healthier!

This was the best experience ever. The staff was attentive, the facilities were clean and up-to-date. I couldn't have ever asked for a better doctor. Has anyone ever rang a nurse call light and have nurses run down the hall to check on you? I have. Dr. Joya rocks!

Hey, well it has been 7 months since my band and I have lost 35 pounds. Could have lost a lot more, but I admit I have not tried very hard the last 2 months. I am still so happy that I had it done.

I was just thinking about how things have gone for me over the last 9 months since surgery, and I thought I'd share it with my friends here. You know how before you get married so excited and nervous. The there's the BIG day,,and the honeymoon. For me it was great,,but I was looking forward more to the "daily" life of being married. The simple pleasure of knowing my husband was coming home every night and there was the comfort in just the basic boredom of marriage. This is where I'm at with this Gastric Sleeve. I am at a high comfort level with just the basicness of it, now. Yes I did greave the Loss Of PIGGING out. More than I thought I would. Now I really don't care about food so much. I found I LOVE salads and fruit. I LOVE the fact that I've Lost so much weight (almost 100lb now). I am in a comfortable size 12 and LOVE IT! I went to the movies with my son yesterday. I for the first time in YEARS,,,sat in a movie seat and I't wasn't a tight fit! IN fact I wasn't even touching the sides of the chair! I FELT SO SMALL, WOW...what a LOVELY change! Basicly what I'm saying, even if I don't loose more weight, being at a healthy size feel so much better to me than any food ever did. This tool has given me better control of over eating. I want to eat better now. I now feel I can look in the mirror and Love what I see. The farther Im out from surgery too the easier it has been for me. The only regret is I didn't do this sooner. Wishing you all the BEST!!!!

Just wanted to say "Thank You" to you, Dr. Joya and staff for taking such good care of me during this whole process. I returned yesterday, a day early, feeling pretty good and glad to have had this done. I was very pleasantly surprised with the cleanliness of the facility and the attentiveness of the staff.

I just wanted to say Thanks to everybody who took care of me in Puerto Vallarta. The whole experience went smoothly and I really appreciated the wheelchair waiting for me at the airport after surgery. I have gotten several questions about the quality of care I received in Mexico. It is with great pleasure that I can tell them that the care was as good and better than I have received in the States.

This message is for all of the wonderful people who assisted in my recent surgery experience on April 20th. Gerald, Nathalie, Dr Joya, Dr Espinoza, Dr. Alvarez, Dr Velesqez, and all of the nurses Olga, Veronica, Candi, and Lupita. Thank you for taking such good care of me and giving me this new chance at life. I am truly grateful for every single one of you. I arrived home in Fairbanks, Alaska last night, and I feel great! I had to leave a couple of days early from the hotel NH Krystal, but the flights were good and I had no problems at all. My incisions are healing well, and I am able to sleep great in my own bed. I have friends who come check me each day. Again, THANK YOU for offering this surgery package, and for having such an excellent team for each stage of pre-op preparation, surgery, and post-op care.

I had my sleeve with Dr Joya in January of this year, I am 2 months out and have lost 52 lbs! Let me just tell you that I am a not the person that goes out and takes chances, however I had heard so SO SO many wonderful testimonials about Dr. Joya and his staff, that this woman made up her mind after much research, and soul searching and went for it! I arrived in Mexico, was met at the airport, brought to the hospital, met Nathalie, she was a Godsend, such a cool chick, made me feel so welcomed and loved, held my hand thru the weepy tears and assured me I would be ok! I met Dr Joya and Dr Espinoza who calmed my fears in an instant, you knew that you were in great hands, I trusted them, you just know when you are in the presence of competence. They were the most kind, hand on your shoulder, look in your eyes when they spoke to you, Dr's that I was blessed to have. I never had any surgery before in my life so I was scared, I went alone to Mexico and I can tell you that I would do it again in a heartbeat!! I went to a beautiful resort after I spent 2 nights in the hospital and recovered on the beach, it was breathtaking! All that is included in the Package (s) that they offer with Dr Joya. Nathalie was wonderful, Dr Joya was easy on the eyes and a warm caring person, as was Dr Espinoza who came to the resort to check on me and make sure all was ok! Dr Joya Thank you, Thank you so much for helping me and caring for me, I cant thank you enough. Thank you for your wonderful staff Nathalie, Gerald who arranged my whole trip, the wonderful nurses, and Dr Espinoza for following up with me at the resort. I will never forget you all and will keep you in my prayers always.

I have lost 30 pounds so far and have very little nausea. It is taking me a while get my strength back, must be the difference between being 60 years old instead of 50 years old. I cannot say enough about the hospital, Dr. Joya, staff, and the care I got in Mexico. I have been in the hospital in the USA several times and have never received the quality of care that i got there. GREAT EXPERIENCE!.

I had an excellent experience. I was so nervous, but everything went off without a hitch. The whole team was extremely nice, compassionate, and attentive to my needs, questions, concerns etc. When I needed something extra for pain, they handled it. I felt very well cared for. As an RN, I can say the hospital in Mexico was cleaner than the one I currently work for. The docs were much nicer too. I would recommend Dr Joya to anyone. I especially loved my anesthesiologist.

As soon as I meet Dr Joya, I was immediately at ease. He told me everything looked fine with blood work and everything was going to be fine. In the days after surgery, Dr Joya came to see me every day. He expressed genuine concern of my well being. I couldn't have asked for a more professional, competent surgeon.

Acknowledging that each person's experience is unique, I had my lap band surgery on Friday, Jan 19th and I felt it was a truly positive experience. I was more than happy with how I was met at the airport, meeting Nathalie at the hospital, being prepped for surgery, and being cared for by the nurses. More on Nathalie later. Here are the things that may have made it better for me. I am a student in a health profession (Midwifery), spent time in hospitals, and have spent lots of time around Docs and Nurses, both grumpy and fabulous. I was well educated on anatomy, tests, steps, procedures before I got there. My sister-in-law is from Mexico and although not very much, I know a bit, "un poquito," of Spanish and how to ask for certain things. I also brought a Spanish-English dictionary and looked up what I didn't understand. When the nurse said "primo comor then shower" before I could have a shower, and shook my apple juice, I looked it up and it meant "first eat." Okay - I'll drink the juice! The IV placement was the best I'd ever had, the blood draw was painless, and the nurses were kind if not overly chatty. Which was good, cause sometimes when I'd use a bit of Spanish, they'd get really inspired and start chatting away and I'd have to say, I don't understand. The internal medicine doc was super great, in my experience, he was completely competent, spoke english really well and was kind. He praised my big old tummy as "Good, good" which placed him warmly in my heart forever. Dr. Joya came to assess me prior to surgery and was younger somehow and chattier than he looks in his photo. He was efficient and thorough (these are the things I was looking for). He praised my big old tummy as "excellent, excellent" which placed HIM warmly in my heart forever. It turns out that pre-op diet helps and I had lots of room. I had forgotten to remove my wedding ring and on the way down to the OR,the nurse took it and said "i'll put in your room, okay?" My ring was safely waiting for me when I got back after surgery! The OR was clean and well built. The staff where thorough and efficient. In the recovery room, I was talked to in that loud wake- up voice (I was totally high) and was able to help them move me onto the bed to be wheeled back up to my room. I woke up in my room and had to pee. I rang the bell and to my shock and surprise, the internal Medicine Doc answered the call bell. I don't know what time it was, but it was late. A sign of a good doc, in my experience. He was super nice, patting my foot and making sure I was okay. I said "I need to use the loo" which totally confused him and then I quickly said "bano, por favor." He said okay, I'll get a nurse to assist you right away. My IV also backed up with blood, but that is usually from moving around, or lifting your hand up high when you get up to pee. It is not really a problem, and if you lower your hand, it will usually clear on its own. My nurse the next day was totally efficient again, yet not as friendly as the previous one. That is okay by me - people are people. She did a good job. I always made sure to say "gracias" and "thank you" and I made sure to say goodbye when I left. Never hurts! To the operator on the phone, I actually said "merci" and felt totally dorky, but I am from Canada, so I would, in my head, go through "English, French, Spanish" when searching for words. Dr. Joya came to see me and said everything went great, no problems. Nathalie: She was GREAT! She was accomodating, kind, efficient. I would speak totally highly of her. She was processing another patient just before me so I had to wait some, but it was fine. I made friends with a little bratty kid running around Emergency. Nathalie was a dream. She not only does her job, she enjoys it, and it shows. She was willing to share info with me and answer my questions. She went above and beyond in my experience. She asked me to e-mail her a note to let them know when I made it back to Canada. She wrote a nice note back. The hospital: That hospital was the nicest, cleanest, least crowded one I have ever been in. The staff to patient ratio seemed high, and the staff seemed unharried and totally competent.

I am SOOOO pleased with Dr. Joya and his staff. On January 3th I found Dr. Joya on the internet. I emailed Gerald with some questions. The following morning I had his response. I phoned Gerald to follow up on some more questions, I recieved his voice mail and I left my name and number. Gerald got back to me within a matter of hours. I spoke with Gerald at some length and felt I was being treated with honesty and respect. When I asked about needing a passport Gerald told me about Jan 23 being the cutoff. I didn't have a passport and was bumbed out again that here was another delay. Gerald suggested that we schedule the surgery for the 18th. Finally someone was moving obstacles out of the way of getting this surgery instead putting them up. I told Gerald I would have to makes sure I could get my Mom to watch my boys and the time off work etc but that please keep the date for me - he told me no problem and that he didn't need the 1000 dollars deposit until the following week and that I was firm for the 18th. Again being very accommodating. I landed in PV in the early evening and like many have said no problem with finding my ride to the Hosp. etc. I meet with Nathlie and she was very professional and personable. If the truth be told I was very scared of having the surgery etc. - she reassured me as best she could. I spoke with I believe the Anasetcgiolgist while waiting to go to surgery. We went over my medical history form - never have had surgery before or really ever been sick before so there wasn't much to talk about. I told him I was nervous about everything, he offered to give me a sedative but I declined./ At I believe 8 pm or there abouts I was being rolled down to surgery - it was a very surreal experience. I was in Mexico having surgery. I was very scared and mad - mad at myself for not being able to control my eating, mad at the Ins. Co. for making me leave my country to have medically necessary surgery. I meet Dr. Joya for the first time in the operating cooridoor. He asked my if I had any questions or concerns. I told him I had been researching this surgery for 10 months and him the past 2 weeks - I had nothing to ask - lets just do it. When I regained consciousness right after the surgery I was really really happy to be alive. I was warned by Nathalie that I would have severe gas and I would think I was having a heart attack - she was right. That night in the hospital was rough. The nurses where very young ( and cute I recall ) but they never got my IV right. Everytime I looked at it - it was half full of my blood ( the tubing ) and whenever the nursed came in the room they would squeeze the blood back in me but they never fixed the IV. I was so out of it I really didn't care. I walked around alot that night, better said I shuffled around alot that nite and did sleep some. When the sun came up I was hurting - my chest was soooo tight with gas and I couldn't take a full deep breathe without discomfort. I was dying for some water but the nurses wouldn't give me anything to drink - under Doctors orders I am sure. That morning as I was shuffling about I meet again the same Doctor that I had first meet. He told me everything I was experiencing was normal. I asked him if he could order me some water and he said he would. He also noticed my IV tubing. When I got back to the room there was ice chips and apple juice - oh man was that good. Also the day nurse redid my IV. There must be some pain meds in that IV bag cuss after that I felt much better. I spoke with Dr. Joys that morning also - he told me everything went great etc the few minutes I did speak with Dr. Joya he was professional and cordial - I enjoyed speaking with him and he also has a very nice and reassuring smile. Around noon Nathlie came to my room and checked me out and gave me cab fare to the Hotel. Check in time is 3pm and I was at the hotel at 1pm. I was able to get into my room at apprx 2:15 but that sucked not having a room for that hour. That first day at the hotel was rough. I have read where people say after the surgery they felt fine - I just assumed I would be one of those people - I wasn't. I felt horrible and I was wondering how was I gonna fly out in 1.5 days. My indegistion was horrible. An then to make matters worse I stepped out on the balconey and shut the slidding glass door behind me - bad move - they lock automatically from the inside and I had used the chain lock on the room door - security got in my room pretty quickly though - but I felt pretty stupid. The following day saturday I felt soooo much better. I was walking at my normal stride again - the gas was much better - I hadn't been so happy to pass gas since the 6th grade. I spent the afternoon in downtown PV and actually accidently ran out of taxi money and couldn't find an ATM - I paid 5 peso's and took a bus back to the Krystal - that was an experience. PV was beautiful and everyone I meet very nice. The sunsets are as good as advertised - it was a good place to be by myself as I took stock of my life and to move forward now with no more excuses for being obese. I went back to work on tuesday. In short my experience was overall very good with Dr. Joya and staff. Everything was as advertised - no hidden cost. All my questions where answered in a timely fashion. I was treated with respect and complete profesionalism. I could not say those things about the surgeons offices I dealt with in the States. I am so pleased I choose Dr. Joya over the States Doctors - I didn't need to take out a lien on my house to have this surgery ( used all my savings and tax refund however ). And so far so good with surgery but of course I am still in the very early stages. When I have my first fill I will have it with flouro and than I can be sure the band is placed correctly and there are no problems with the port etc but I have no reason to suspect there will be.

I'm so happy with my weight loss results with my lap band. Dr. Joya performed my surgery in April 2006 and was top weight of 288, I'm now 9 months out and down almost 90 lbs. It jhas been a pleasure referring several people to Dr. Joya and his excellent staff. I know that he had a part in saving my life in the near future and for that I ma forever grateful. Im going down next month for a fill and can't wait to get the last 40 lbs off. If you are contemplating the surgery but are a little nervous about Mexico, please join Dr. Joy's support group and talk with us about our experiences. Thank you Dr. Joya

My husband was going to come with me to PV. Instead I went it alone. It was wonderful. I did the liquid diet for 2 weeks previous to the surgery. When Natalie weighed me, I had lost 24 pounds. I had no complications from the surgery. The doctors were wonderful. The first four days with no liquids were a little tough, but then there was the hotel. Everyone is right, the popsicles are awesome. Starting to eat jello, and drink juice made me realize how much I took for granted here in the States and with the food that I used to eat. The flavor was overwhelming. I must have been kissed by a leprachan because I have had no (absolutely no) trouble. I had heard about the beads being hard. Yes, yes they are. It gave me my first exercise class to keep rotating to salvage the bruises of my body. The humidity was high. I felt as though I were a princess and I took the seven days to give myself peace of mind. In the quiet I learned how much of my life was in the negative stress of the previous life. I really felt cleansed when I left. Two weeks after the surgery I weighed myself ( at my husbands encouragement). I did not think that I would have much to lose with the first loss of 24 lbs. I was extremely happy to see that I had lost 29 additional pounds. WOW!!!!! 53 pounds down and only 200 left to go. I know that this was the right step and I will share it with anyone that asks. Thanks for all the encouragement, love and support.

Hi Everyone, My surgery was last Monday and today I am 6 days into recovery and feeling great. I had the vertical sleeve gastrectomy and am looking forward to a new life where food is not the major concern or interest. Just a few things for people to consider when going to MX from the USA. The medications that are used for pain and nausea have different names than what I am used to here in the states. Because of the language barrier, I was not able to ever exactly figure out just what I was getting, but the bottom line is that they all worked. One medication they used was Ketalor also known as Toradol and that was given to me IV for pain. It is not a narcotic but very effective. I'm an RN and we use Toradol for our C/section patients. I was also given a pill version of this for my pain medication on leaving the hospital. We don't have Toradol in pill form in the states and the closest to it would be Ibuprofen. If you have problems with migraines I would strongly suggest that you bring what works best for you with you and then clear with Dr.Joya or his staff Dr.Espinoza an ok to go ahead and use it. I did have a terrible migraine the 3rd day into my stay and wished that I had had my own ice bag with me as the nurses were only able to use a glove filled with ice and it wasn't very effective for a ice bag on my throbbing head. I also wish that I had brought along an electric heating pad as there were no hot water bottles either. My friend made me a heating pad by boiling water in the electric tea pot, I'd brought with me, and poured hot water over a towel and put the towel in a plastic bag and another towel between my tummy and the hot towel in the plastic bag. It worked very well for relieving some of the gas pain, but having a heating pad would have been better. I also brought along plenty of Gas X which helped when the walking did not. There are no clocks on the walls in the rooms at the hospital, so if you want to know the time, bring an alarm clock. I was able to keep my cell phone charged on their plug ins, but didn't get a plan that would let me call out of Mexico prior to leaving the USA, so was only able to communicate with my mother when she called me. Something to check out. Also, be sure to let your credit card company know that you will be putting a major about of money on your card in Mexico and give them the dates that you will be there. Some credit card companies will be reluctant to approve the charge when you are getting admitted and that can really delay things. Fortunately I was told about that before leaving. Things are on "Mexico" time there so if they say they will be there to see you at 9:30am... it might not be until 11 or 12. Just be relaxed about time schedules as you have no power over when things happen. I'm sure that this would be the case no matter where in Mexico one had surgery and Dr Joya and Dr. Espinoza are very very busy. There are no wash cloths either at the hospital or the Krystal, so if you are a wash rag person, bring your own. I was also told that the beds at the Krystal were very hard. I like a hard bed, so for me it was perfect, but if you like a soft bed, you can request a topper pad for your bed at the Krystal. Also be sure to ask for extra pillows as you will want more than just two to give support while lying on your back. It was a grand experience and I would choose the Vertical sleeve gastrectomy over the others anytime and would choose Dr Joya without a doubt. I hope those of you that read this find it helpful and anyone is free to email me if you have any questions. Blessings everyone on your wt loss journey.

Vallarta is beautiful. Dr. Joya did an awesome job, according to how I feel and my tummy looks. The nurses were so sweet and the hospital was very nice.

Dr. Joya is very professional and the rest of his staff were wonderful as well. I got better care with them then I do here in the states. I truly believe that we are not just money to him that he actually cares.I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I had my surgery in December and I am down 105 lbs! I am shocked and so happy. The doctors and nurses here were very caring and I swear Nathalie is on call 24/7 poor thing. Even the concierge at the NH Krystal even went home and made me some beef broth because the restaurants only have chicken... I have not had any complications really. Initially I was worried about going to another country to have surgery but this was the best thing I could ever have done. Everyone was so kind except for some of the tourist from America who had the audacity to make fun of my weight. The food in Mexico looks good and I can't wait to come down and visit again and this time I'll get to eat something!

I just returned from Mexico and found the care there first rate. I was extremely nervous about the level of care, the condition of the hospital, etc. Everything was as good as I would expect at "home." The most wonderful thing was the supportive fellow patients that I met in the hospital and at the Krystal.

It has been a little over one year since my surgery. Before surgery I weighed 350 lbs. Now I weigh 197 lbs. This has been a blessing. There is no way I would have lost that amount of weight ever! The care that I received while in Mexico was 1st rate. I cannot express how happy I am with the results and my new life.

Guys it has been over 6 months since my surgery and I have lost over 57 pounds. I started with a weight of 237 and now I am down to 180 pounds. From a size 18-20 to a size 10. Dr, Joya and his team were great and I thank them very much. I still continue to exercise and lose inches, this is because of the weight training. I have eliminated bread all together, it has not been my friend in the past. I take daily liquid vitamins and get some type of exercise everyday. The loss in pounds will add years back onto your life, so keep it off. Continue to watch your calories and get some exercise. Thanks again Dr. Joya and your staff for adding peace back to my life!!!! My husband thanks you.

I found Dr. Joya online, and was referred to him, by a friend, who loves him! I was very nervous to go to MEXICO to get this done, but my experience was amazing! Natalie was the sweetest thing EVER! She was great! She picks you up as soon as you get off the air plane and get into the airport! She is so kind, and helpful! Then I went to the hospital and it was SOOOO CLEAN! I had laparoscopic Lapland surgery that same night and the next day, I left to my hotel. I stayed at the NH Krystal and it was BEAUTIFUL. The view was amazing and it was very nice. They have a shuttle to take you back and forth, so you don't have to walk if you don't want too. I recommend staying an extra day, I didn't want to leave!!! But I did. I made it home safe and sound and I was 285 on the 10th, and I am 260 pounds now! 4 WEEKS and 25 pounds! Amazing. I haven't got my first fill yet, i will in 2 weeks. But I love it! I wish I would of always been this way. I don't LIVE TO EAT, any more. I eat to live... THANK YOU SO MUCH Dr.Joya and Team! You guys are amazing!!! Natalie you to girl!

I want all of you who are pre-banding or even just thinking about banding that this was the best decision I've ever made and the best money I've ever spent. When I think of the lousy decisions I've made regarding money, the money I've thrown away hand over fist on diet schemes, I am thankful to have heard about this and to have had the opportunity to have the band placed. Dr. Joya is excellent. You are in knowledgeable, experienced, kind hands. PV is pretty cosmopolitan and you have nothing to fear. I felt FAR more lost in Europe than there. Most people speak enough English to be able to help you. My advice to anyone considering this...run, don't walk, to the nearest bank, airport, whatever! JUST DO IT! It'll be the best thing you will have ever done for yourself.

I had surgery with Dr. Joya on 4/10/2006. Everything was beyond my expectations. The "horror" stories of people having surgery in Mexico are from those who have obviously never experienced it. The "office staff" of surgeons in the US will tell you about how they have to "fix" Mexican problems, how they don't use US bands and how the surgeons aren't trained. However, when you ask for specific examples, they can't give you any. My experience was flawless. The Cornerstone Hospital and nurses were superior to any of those in the US. When I "rang" for a nurse, they came "running" in the room. Whatever I asked for, I received. Dr. Joya and his assistant MD's were gracious, kind, intelligent, but at the same time humble. I had no doubt that they knew what they were doing. There were no negative comments about BMI's, size or shape of their patients. I was 100% confident and comfortable with their care. Nathalie was kind and wonderful. She was always objective, honest and helpful. The arrangements made by Gerald were great. He made sure I got the fastest flight regardless of the cost. There were no "hidden" costs. The NH Krystal was a nice hotel and the staff is obviously used to Dr. Joya's patients, having placed an egg-crate cushion on my bed without asking, and a pillow behind my back when getting a pedicure. I am no longer angry at my insurance company for not covering the lap band. This was the best thing they could have ever done...pushed me all the way to Puerto Vallarta!

Hi everyone, My sister and I just got back today Sunday April 9th from PV. We flew in on April 6th Natalie picked us up from the airport along with my brother-n-law and went straight to the hospital. WE had our lap band surgeries 4 & 5 hours latter. Our nurses were Yolanda, Lette & Gabby all very nice Gabby knows the most English, but they will all work with you. When we woke up on Thursday to head out for PV we could not eat or drink anything, even the night of surgery nothing to drink until the next morning around 11:00 am, so don't be disappointed not even ice chips like here in the states. The after care is just Awesome the Cornerstone Hospital is so clean you really could eat off the ground. There is a beautiful fountain outside on the patio on the second level that you can walk by also watch the sun come up in the morning with the beautiful mountains in the background. Natalie came to pick us up around 2:00 pm on Friday to take us to the NH Krystal Hotel. We chose before hand to stay 2nights which really helped, but the longer you can stay the better you will fill to make your journey home. With having the lapband surgery try not to LAUGH it hurts so bad REALLY! If you our like us you will have tightening of the band and its REALLY painful not just discomfort it takes your breath way! So I recommend if your not up to eating at an restaurant to order room service the chicken broth soup is on the menu although it should say (#15 Dr. Joya's special soup) and like everyone who has had the soup says it is really good. It is only $.50 more for room service so why not really treat yourself. We had ocean view rooms and did not leave the hotel grounds at all. We did take a walk to the little store and bought popsicles which really hit the spot. There is beautiful huts with chairs that are very comfortable out on the beach they are adjustable lawn chairs and after sleeping on such hard beds its a treat to go outside enjoy the scenery and just relax. There will be many vendors that go by you selling stuff, also many people who are not on this site emailing that there leaving for surgery and you will meet many people also natives who will tell you that Dr. Joya is the best at what he does!!! I felt proud that we chose him! Take American money at least 50 singles great for tips, taxi rides or vendors. They except American money everywhere twenties and lower. We had wheel chairs waiting for us when the plane arrived too much of a walk and they help you thur customes and all took us about 10 minutes from plane right to our car to get out of Ohare airport in Chicago now thats AMAZING!! So thats a good request! We have tried many other diets together, but the LBS is a life changing event that both my sister and I will be going through and I am very grateful we were able to come up with the finacing. If anyone ever asks me would I do it again in PV my answer no question about it YES! Good Luck!

The hospital was the cleanest, nicest I have ever been in. The surgery was the easiest I have ever experienced. I came to shortly after the surgery and was only groggy for a few minutes. I felt a little nauseated for about 30 seconds before they put something in my IV and was fine after that. I had no pain whatsoever. I really had to keep looking at the incisions to believe I really had surgery, because it didn't hurt at all. A day or two later I had gas pain in my shoulder from the gas they use during the procedure. If I had realized that taking something like gas-x would help I would have felt even better. Dr. Joya is very supportive and caring. I have no regrets what so ever. I would much rather be in the hospital in Puerto Vallarta then home! The care was excellent.

I have had a weight problem for many years. Pre surgery weight was 260. I had surgery about 7 weeks ago and to this date I have lost 38 lbs. Its been over 13 years since being this weight. Thank you Dr. Joya and all his staff. The nurses at the cornerstone hospital were wonderful. The hospital was clean. I am a nurse and have worked in a hospital for years. Also I have had 8 previous surgeries. When I told friends that I was going to Mexico for surgery they couldn't believe it. They thought I was taking such a risk. This is an example of the great care, while my IV was started a couple of drops of blood got on the floor they immediately cleaned it up then sent someone in to mop the floor the whole room. Also the day after surgery I was in the shower having a hard time with the pain didn't realize that water was leaking out the door of the shower. Guess what they were standing right outside the door to mop the whole room again and clean up my mess. Answered my lights within a minute or two. A specialist doctor that I work with was in PV at the time that I had my surgery, he observed the procedure and he was very impressed with Dr Joya's skill. The doctor that watched is a Gastroenterologist. Thank you Natalie for everything. Gerald thank you for putting up with all my questions and requests. To anybody that is thinking of doing this procedure, the lapbanding go for it. The first two weeks are hard. After that Its a piece of cake.

I left on Feb 20th, arrived in PV went to hospital, had the bypass. Everyone was very gracious and friendly. Hospital (Cornerstone) was spotless, never seen any hospital in states that clean. Got out of hospital 2 days early, begged to get out because although everyone there was awesome...I have had so many surgeries, I prefer to recover in my own space. DR. Joya advised against, but I am the "CRAZY AMERICAN" and he let me go to the KRYSTAL to recover. DR. Espenosa came every day. I have not even vomitted (sorry about graphic description). Lost 12 lbs by the time I got to PV on pre-op diet...starving day of surgery, but afterwords woke up not hungry at all. Hardest part was not having ANY water for four days, but washed mouth out with water and spit it out. I survived that, but lips really dried out. So weighed my self last night and started out before pre-op diest at 230lbs...last night was 209.7 lbs! Amazing So that is my experience thus far. Anyhow, I'm doing well...and the experience in PV was awesomwe. I recovered more from my sunburn I got the first day I was out in the sun, then the surgery. Dr. Espenosa, DR. Joya, Nathalie, Gerald, Elizabeth...and so many more were very nice and helpful. The Mexican cultural is amazing and those who live and work there are some of the most gracious people I have ever met!

Hi all I just got back from PV and what an awesome experience it was. I was banded Friday night literally like an hour after arriving, it was great! The hospital was so clean and comfortable. My mom went with me and made me feel so comfortable with my decision of chosing Dr. Joya when she said she wants to return to Puerto Valalrta for a vacation. The resort was beautiful and I was feet away from the ocean.

Natalie, Gerald, Dr. Espinoza and Dr. Joya are excellent. i made the trip alone and was well taken care of would recommend this to anyone that needs it. The burping is a little nerve racking but it seems to be getting less frequent. I lost 20lbs in the two weeks prior to surgery and have lost a total of 35 so far as of feb 13 06.

What a GREAT Group of people we have been blessed to meet!!! My friend had bypass with Dr Joya and she passed on his info to me and i have lapband! I am very happy with the care, surgery, and results. The Doctor, Gerald, Natalie, nurses, hospital and hotel were GREAT!!!! The funniest things i remember is going into the operating room and i was so scared! The tears started and DR Joya rubbed my shoulder and told me to not worry, it would be fine. THe nurses were right there telling me it is ok....finally i think they decided i stressed enough, and out i went!! Fast...The worse part was being awake while they strapped my arms down. Other than that , all was Great!!! I went walking almost immediately after surgery since i was dying for a cigarette. But the service is great and Now I am down from a size 22 to a 14!!! No complaints from me here!! THanks Dr Joya and staff for a great experience!!!

I'm back from Mexico and the RNY surgery, and am doing great. I am down about 12 pounds since the surgery. I had mine on January 16th. We stayed for the extra days afterward, so we were able to enjoy Puerto Vallarta a little bit. I would recommend going here for surgery to anyone considering it. I did a lot of comparisons before I decided on Dr. Joya, and I still came back to him.

I must admit that I had a lot of preconceived notions about Mexico but when we arrive they were all out the window. We met Nathalie at the airport and let me tell you she was the best. She took us to the hotel and back to the airport and whenever I needed anything she was there. I had the gastric bypass surgery and it was the best decision of my life. I have already lost 60lbs and feel great. If you are feeling any reservations about having the surgery in Mexico don't it was wonderful. The hospital was the cleanest that I have ever been in. The staff was so sweet and nice and made sure that you were comfortable. The care that I received out of the hospital was the best I have ever had. Dr. Joya's assistant, Dr. Espinosa, took excellent care of me when I was discharged from the hospital. The hotel was beautiful right on the beach and Dr. Espinosa called on me twice a day to make sure that everything was okay. When I had trouble with my drain and it was the middle of the night he came instantly and made sure that I was okay. I just can't say enough about Dr. Joya and his team. I just would like to tell them thank you again and again. Don't let the idea of having the surgery in Mexico stop you from having this surgery, they literally saved my life. Beside where else can you recover while sitting on the beach.

I just got back home this past Monday having the Lapband procedure with Dr. Joya's group. The whole experience was top notch, even down to the resort that Dr. Joya puts you up in for recovery after discharge. The price he is charging includes everything including airfare and the nights stay which was valued at $130.00 a night, yes I stayed right on the ocean in a 5 star resort. I only wished I had taken some advice from other patients who said to plan on arriving a couple days ahead for a negotiated rate of $79.00 per night that way I would have enjoyed the whole trip even more. The hospital and staff were also top notch with around the clock care, I can not express anymore as to how impressed I was with the whole experience.
